What Are Some Chinese Traditions and Culture?

Religion

Culture is often intrinsically tied to religion, although sometimes it is not. However, we cannot deny that the two do have connections. China does not have a national religion; however, there are four main religions practiced in China. They are:

Buddhism
Taoism
Chinese folk religion
Confucianism

Many people do not adhere solely to only one religious practice. Instead, they blend a few of them to find the beliefs with which they are comfortable. Buddhism is probably the most widespread religion that is practiced, although there are many ways to practice it. You could be a theistic or an atheistic Buddhist, or you might combine Chinese traditions and culture from the folk religion and worship gods and goddesses from those days.

Weddings

Weddings are another area of life that are infused with religious, cultural, and traditional practices. While not all of the practices from Ancient Chinese weddings are adhered to today, some of them do still appear in modern nuptials. One of the most popular is the tea ceremony. During the actual ceremony, homage is paid to Heaven, Earth, other gods, and ancestors at the family altar. Afterwards, a cup of tea with two lotus seeds or two red dates in it is offered to the parents of the groom.

New Year

You might celebrate the Chinese New Year yourself, or perhaps you have neighbors who do and bring you over delicacies, such as moon cakes, when the timing of the year draws near. They clean their homes to get rid of any bad luck or ill will that might have fallen upon the home, and sometimes they will do some painting or other types of redecorating. They will make decorations that relate to wishes for the New Year. Their New Year's Eve is a big feast with the whole family. Early the next morning, presents are exchanged and the families go from door to door wishing good tidings to all of their neighbors.

Yin and Yang

Popularized in America by modern art pieces and jewelry, you might already be familiar with the concept of the Yin and the Yang. Chinese tradition and culture states that everything must be in balance. Yin represents the feminine and negative side of nature, while Yang represents the masculine and positive side of nature. The Chinese believe that although these are two distinct forces, they rely on each other to keep everything in balance. They often use this concept in feng shui to decorate their homes in such a manner that keeps with the traditional Chinese style.

Lucky Numbers

Indeed, lucky numbers have a role in the culture and traditions of the Chinese. According to their culture, in the Forbidden City there are 999 rooms. They look to different numbers as sources of both luckiness and unluckiness. Whenever they are selecting an item that has to do with numbers, such as a telephone number, license plate number, and so forth, they will pay careful attention to how much luck that number is perceived to have. Of course, as with all traditions, you will find some people who adhere to them and some who do not.
