Located in Agra, India, the Taj Mahal was originally built by the emperor of the Mughals, Muslim rulers of India at the time. The emperor, Shah Jahan, created it as a monument and mausoleum for his beloved wife, whose grave is located in the lower level. When Shah Jahan passed away he was buried beside her, so the Taj Mahal is now a mausoleum for both of them.

Structure of the Taj Mahal

The structure of the building is created entirely from white marble, giving it a surreal effect. It stands on a raised platform and has a symmetrical design, with separate elements that interlock together to create the main structure. The main dome of the building measures 58 feet across. 

The Taj Mahal took twenty-two years to complete and the labor of 20,000 workers. The project was headed by a well-known master Islamic architect of the time, who worked in conjunction with the best craftsmen from several surrounding Muslim cities on the actual building process. The design was created by a collaboration between three artists from Persia, Italy, and France.
