Use of Camp Bucca

At first, plans were for the camp to be used on a temporary basis only, housing prisoners of war on their way to other locations.

However, as post-war tensions began to create problems in Iraq and insurgency rose, the military once again found themselves in need of housing for prisoners.
Most were sent to the Abu Ghraib prison just outside of Baghdad, but when that prison reached capacity Camp Bucca was forced back into service.

By 2005, Camp Bucca held approximately 5,000 prisoners; it has a total holding capacity of 6,000.
The camp has been largely considered a model and used as a prime example for other prison camps; it is known for its carefully monitored policies and its extremely humane conditions, all things considered.
For example, cinder block housing units are provided for prisoners, whereas other camps only provide tents, even in inclement weather.
Camp Bucca also gives prisoners organized activities such as sports matches, and allows them to organize and hold church services as well as literacy classes and similar activities.

Construction at Camp Bucca

In 2010, the U.S. military in charge of the camp officially began an extensive construction project on the premises. The project involves laying pipe and building a total system treatment system that will allow them to process waste water, treat it, and release it back into use, helping to supply and introduce clean water to several nearby cities, including Umm Qasr.
