How Do I Make a Heart Symbol With My Keyboard?

Making a heart symbol on your keyboard is a great shorthand way to show your  love for something or someone. it is a cute way to close your emails and a fun and simple way to send a text message or IM that expresses a positive emotion.

You can make a heart symbol with your keyboard by typing the "<" key and then typing the number "3." The "<" key is found to the right of your "m" key on your board, above the "," (comma). Because it is above the comma, you will need to shift the "shift" button while you press that key on your keybord. The number "3" is on the number pad of your keybord.

When you type the "<" and the "3" next to each other with no spaces in between, it appears to look like a heart:

<3

You can also make the font larger or bold the symbol using your fonts menu in order to make it appear larger and more heart-like.

Using the Heart Symbol

The heart symbol is commonly used as a signature. You can also use it in a sentence to describe your love for something. For example, you could type "I <3 cats" to signify that you like cats.

This can be a faster way of expressing yourself if you are writing an email or if you are sending an instant message. It is a form of shorthand because you do not have to type out "love" or "like," which makes it easier. It may also be easier to use this when typing on a call phone and texting, since there are less characters to type.

It can also be a cute way to signify your affection for someone when you are not yet ready to proclaim love. For example, if you are involved in a new relationship and you do not want to sign your emails with "love" you could sign the emails with an emoticon heart.

Emoticons

If you are wondering how to make a heart symbol with your keyboard, you may also be wondering how to express other emotions through keyboard shortcuts. For example, you may wonder how you can wink, smile, or stick out your tongue at someone in the virtual world, just by using some special characters you type.

  • You can make a smiley face by using the colon key ":" and the right parenthesis key. The colon key is found to the right of the "L" key on your keyboard, above the semi-colon. It also requires you to use the shift button when pressing the ";" key. Type the ":" and the ")" next to each other and it appears as a smile- :)
  • A wink is made in a similar manner, except instead of using a colon, you use your semicolon key (also the left of your "L" but without the shift). Again, do not place a space between the characters. When you type them together, it looks as if someone is winking- ;)
  • If you are feeling more playful, you can express a tongue sticking out by using the colon key ":" and a lower case letter "P". Typed together, the two characters are a cute and teasing tongue out- :P

Using The Symbols

As people moved away from letters and voice communication and into electronics, they began to look for shorter ways to write things when typing multiple lessages. This has given rise to a whole new body of acroynms as well. For example, the letters "LOL" (laugh out loud) have become part of the vernacular of most people in America and have even begun to be used in everyday language when not on the computer.

Many other acroynms have also been created as a result of the computer age and the popularity of instant messaging programs. "BRB" for "be right back" or "ROFL" rolling on the floor laughing are just another few examples.

These phrases can be used in almost any informal online communication. Remember, though, that they may not be appropriate for more formal settings, such as a business email.
