How Do I Install a Linksys Wireless Router?

Linksys, also known as Linksys by Cisco, is one of the foremost providers of broadband and wireless routers, as well as network products for the workplace. The company was founded in 1988.

Select a Location

The first step in installing a wireless router is to select a location for your router. You should choose a location that places the router somewhat evenly spaced between computers (with the exception of the computer you are connecting it to). If you choose a location that isn’t centrally located between your different locations, certain of the computers will have connection difficulties. Further, the computer you connect it to should be your main computer, because this computer will have the fastest connection.

There also should not be a lot of metal in the location that you select. This is because a wireless signal is not able to operate through metal. Thus, if you place your router in a location with a lot of metal, your connection will not work.

Antenna Set-up

After you’ve selected the location, attach the antennas that are located in the box to your Linksys router.

Attaching the Eternet Cable

You need to remove the Ethernet cable from the box, and connect it to the router. On the back of the router, there will be a connection port labeled “Internet.” Connect the Ethernet cable into this connection port.

Computer Connections

After connecting the Ethernet cable to the router, connect it to the computer that you’ve chosen as your “main” computer. Connect it to any of the connection ports in the back of the computer that are not “WAN” ports.

Plug in the Router

After you plug in the router, wait for the router’s power light to stop flashing. Once the light has stopped flashing, you need to restart your computer. After your computer has restarted, it should be able to access the new IP address that your router provides. This new IP address is accessed through DHCP (also known as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).

Configure the Router

If the Internet is not working, you should configure the router. You can configure the router by the following steps. First, enter the web address http://192.168.1.1/ into your Internet browser.

When the website boots, enter the username “Admin” and do not enter a password. After the website loads the next page, click on the “Internet Setup” button. A menu should appear that allows you to choose the type of connection you have. Your answer will depend on the type of modem you have. If you are unsure of the type of modem, ask customer service.

Next, click on the button that allows you to set a service identifier (this might be under the acronym SSID). This will identify your router, and let you change the password. Next, you have to enter your wireless connection which should be located on the back of your box. You can then enter a password under the “wireless security” button which will protect your connection.

Which Linksys Wireless Router to Purchase

The first step before setting up your wireless router is purchasing the router. You should consider how often you use the Internet in your house, and the speed that you need for the Internet. After you’ve considered these factors, you can purchase a Linksys wireless router which is compatible for your needs.

Now that you know the answer to how do I install a Linksys wireless router, you can begin using it!
