How Do I Set Up My Own Email Address?

In today’s technology based world, email is a necessity. Email is today what a home phone was in the 1970s – it is essential. Whether you are a student or a consummate professional it goes without saying that you must have an email address.

Here is a step-by-step checklist of what you need to do to set up your email address:

  1. Purchase an Internet service provider services package –  your options are dial up, broadband, satellite or DSL.
  2. Decide whether or not you will use the complimentary email address provided by your Internet service provider or if you prefer a free email address from Yahoo, Google (Gmail) or Hotmail.
  3. Go to your landing page (where you would normally log in or create your email account) or the home page of the email providor you want to use (for example, to use Gmail, you would go to http://www.gmail.com")
  4. Click on “Create New Account” or “Sign Up.”
  5. Fill in the necessary information – for example: your alternate email address and your real name.
  6. Pick a unique username  - this should be a combination of letters and numbers.
  7. Pick a password that you can remember – this should be a combination of letters, numbers and odd characters.
  8. Read and agree to the terms of the email provider.

Setting up an email account is less complicated than you may think.
