When Was the First Blackboard Used?

Growing up in America in the late 20th century invariably included being taught by a teacher using a blackboard. Early schools during the era of western expansion were not well equipped and had to use teaching aids that were reusable and easy to acquire. Since 1823, the chalkboard has been the  most inexpensive teaching aid that allows a teacher to present information to a large or small group of people. It carries with it the ability to alter or change the information at will. This provides a great tool for business planning and brainstorming.

In many colleges and universities, during the 1950 through the 1980s, blackboards were used to teach classes. The information was written on the blackboard and copied into a student’s notepad as it was given by the teacher. This feature allowed a teacher to present material on multiple blackboards and erase the used boards as needed to continue on with the lesson without running out of writing space.

Blackboards Join the Teaching Process in 1823

The first patent on record for a blackboard was applied for by Samuel Hall in 1823. Hall was the founder of Vermont’s Concord Academy, one of the first formal schools for the training of American teachers.

Invariably, the subjects taught at the school were taught with the aid of a blackboard. From this point on, the teachers that were sent across the country were trained to use blackboards to teach their students.

Soon, the blackboard had become part of the basic equipment for a schoolroom. It was used as a teaching aid and, for the unruly child, could be used as a form of punishment when students were made to stay after school to clean the erasers and wipe down the chalkboard in preparation for the next day.

The learning process also included students taking a place at the blackboard to work out a math problem or to pick apart the pieces of grammar in a sentence during English class. The blackboard was a very useful implement in the early classrooms.

New Materials Replace the Blackboard

New materials developed by scientists later began to replace the blackboard in schools, boardrooms and at presentations. The blackboard of the past was replaced by a greenboard and is now being replaced by the whiteboard.

Dry erase boards or white boards provide a reusable surface made of a piece of enamel or plastic that can be written upon with special marker pens and then erased when you are done. The markers are available in a variety of different colors and can be used to signify different ideas or trends, much as the different colored lines on a graph show different information.

The whiteboard concept has even made its way to the screens of our computers. Virtual whiteboards are available to a network of users so that each person can present their ideas, whether they are graphical in nature or textual. The ability to share ideas on a whiteboard with other members of a company or meeting by drawing pictures can be of immeasurable value. It stimulates the creativity of each person and provides an environment for ideas to flourish.

The placement of a simple whiteboard in the home can even keep all the members of the family in touch with each other. Messages can be left for those that are due home later, and reminders of tasks and important dates can all be kept track of with the use of this simple tool.

Restaurants have also used blackboards and whiteboards to advertise the daily specials and provide a place for a budding artist on the staff to make the daily menu attractive to the customers. A small blackboard and a handful of colored chalk can make a wonderful and appealing menu advertisement.
