When Does Implantation Occur?

Women actively trying to conceive a baby will want to know when does implantation occur. In general, implantation can occur anywhere from six to ten days after ovulation. This will equate to days twenty through twenty four of a twenty eight day menstrual cycle. However, the signs of implantation can be missed since they are very subtle.

A woman’s menstrual cycle generally lasts for twenty eight days. Normal cycles can be as short as twenty one days or as long as thirty five days. In this time, the body actively prepares for pregnancy. The uterine lining thickens to prepare for implantation. If implantation does not occur, the lining sheds and begins the cycle over again.

The first day of a new cycle is the first day of bleeding. After the four to seven days of bleeding, the uterine lining begins rebuilding itself thanks to a hormone called estrogen. Ovulation occurs in the middle of the cycle, approximately day thirteen through sixteen. At this time, one of the ovaries releases an egg that travels down the fallopian tube and into the uterus. The journey from the ovary to the uterus takes about twenty four hours; however, if the egg becomes fertilized, it will remain in the fallopian tubes for three days.

When Does Implantation Occur?

If the egg is fertilized, then implantation can occur. On average, implantation can occur approximately twenty to twenty four days after the beginning of the last menstrual cycle. However, all women are different and the timing can be different depending on the woman’s cycle. When this happens, the body’s basal temperature will rise or fall and some spotting or bleeding and cramping may occur. Many women mistake the spotting for the beginning of their menstrual cycle when it is, in fact, implantation of the egg.

During implantation, the fertilized egg enters the endometriosis, or uterine lining, and burrows into it in order to begin cell division. Once settled, the cells divide and become the placenta and the baby.

Basal temperatures and timing can tell a woman when she is ovulating. Pregnancy tests can tell a woman when she has conceived. However, there are no tests to tell when an egg has implanted. When does implantation occur? This can only be approximated given a woman’s menstrual cycle.
