How Do You Know Fake or Real Diamonds?

Are you interested in jewelry, and are you interested in how do you know fake or real diamonds? A diamond is considered one of the rarest and most beautiful stones. Diamonds can come in a range of colors, such as clear, green, pink, orange, and even red. Yet, what are the properties of a metal, and how do you know fake or real diamonds?

A diamond is defined as a transparent crystal. The transparent crystal is composed of tetrahedrally-bonded carbon atoms. These carbon atoms then crystallize into a diamond lattice. Diamonds are extremely hard, and they have high optical dispersion. The more pure that a diamond is, the harder the diamond will be.

In fact, diamonds are the hardest known natural material. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, diamonds rate as a ten on the scale. The scale goes from one to ten. One is considered the softest, and ten is considered the hardest.

Geographically, the hardest diamonds have been found in the New England area in the New South Wales area of Australia. Specifically, they have been found in the Copeton and Bingara fields in that area.

How Are Diamonds Formed Naturally?

It requires a very precise combination of events and conditions for diamonds to be formed. Diamonds require materials that contain carbons to be exposed to extreme pressure. This pressure needs to be between forty five and sixty kilobars.

However, at the same time that these materials are exposed to high pressure, the materials also have to be exposed to low temperatures. The only two places on Earth that have these conditions naturally are in the lithospheric mantle below stable continental plates, and at the site of where a meteor has struck.

Some scientists believe that some of the diamonds on Earth actually originated elsewhere in the solar system. One type of the diamonds found both in South America and in Africa, is theorized to actually have originated in outer space and was brought to the planet via asteroid. When the asteroid crashed into Earth, scientists believe that the diamonds were deposited at the site of the impact.

The Hope Diamond

There have been a number of exquisite and rare diamonds throughout history which have become famous for their uniqueness. Perhaps the most famous diamond in the world is the Hope Diamond.

The Hope Diamond is extremely large, and approximately forty five carats. The diamond originated in India, and was found in the Kollur mine. However, the original owner of the diamond is unknown.

The color of the diamond is a dark blue. As of 2010, the diamond is housed in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. The diamond is classified as a Type llb diamond. The diamond is estimated at being worth between three hundred and three hundred and fifty million dollars.

Outside of its beauty, the Hope Diamond is also known for supposedly being cursed. According to legends, a number of owners for the Hope Diamond died or fell to great misfortune. For example, Lord Francis Hope died after receiving the diamond.

How Do You Know Fake or Real Diamonds?

Now, that you know a little more about diamonds, do you want to know how do you know fake or real diamond? First, you could use a diamond tester to determine if the diamond is real. It’s a type of electronic tester that works for all diamonds, except fake diamonds composed of moissanite stone.

You can also use the fog test to determine fake diamonds from real diamonds. Heat on a real diamond disappears instantly. Thus, if you blow onto a stone, and you can see fog, you know it is a fake diamond.

Another test that you can perform is the weighing test. Fake diamonds often weigh more than real diamonds of the same size and shape.
