When Did Jesus Die?

Jesus, also known as Jesus Christ, is one of the central components of Christianity. In Christianity, Jesus is considered a savior and a Messiah. Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead after three days.

Both Christians and historians place Jesus’ death at about 26-36 AD/CE.

When Was Jesus Born?

There is some general consensus among scholars about various dates of Jesus’  life. For example, scholars believe that Jesus was born between seven and two BC/BCE. The designation “BC” means “Before Christ,”  while “BCE” means “Before the Common Era.”

According to the Bible, Jesus was born to a carpenter father named Joseph and a mother named Mary. Christians believe that Jesus was an immaculate conception, and thus Mary was a virgin.

The Bible states that Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great. Although Jesus’  birthday is celebrated as December 25th by the majority of Christians in the world, there is no evidence that this was his actual birthday.

Rather, this has developed as a tradition amongst Christians. The first evidence of December 25th being celebrated as the birth of Jesus dates as far back as 354 AD in Rome.

How Jesus Lived

Christians believe that Jesus lived his life simply, as a carpenter. They believed that he choose twelve apostles to spread his message and the message of his Father (God).

According to Christians, Jesus is the Son of God. However, Jesus is also God himself. This is part of the Mystery of the Trinity in Christianity. The Trinity is the belief that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all one entity.

The Teachings of Jesus

Both scholars and Christians believe that Jesus died when he was quite young, around thirty-three years of age. He only spent a small part of his life preaching, approximately three years.

During his preaching, Christians believe that Jesus performed a considerable amount of miracles. They believe that he turned water into wine, was able to walk on water, healed the sick, helped the blind see again, and feed hundreds of individuals with only two loaves of bread.

Christians believe that before Jesus came to Earth and died, the doors of Heaven were not open for souls. Rather, Jesus had to die before individuals could go to Heaven. Christians believe that after Jesus was crucified, he rose from the dead. The Resurrection of Jesus is celebrated on Easter Sunday each year.

Jesus in the Bible

The majority of information about Jesus’ life comes from the Bible. Within the Bible, four different canonical gospels chronicle the life of Jesus Christ. These four canonical gospels are:

  • The Gospel of Matthew
  • The Gospel of Mark
  • The Gospel of Luke
  • The Gospel of John

Historians do not take these gospels as strict fact or biography, and most historians understand that the gospels were written with the intention of promoting Christianity and Christian beliefs. In fact, the Gospels have differences amongst them. The Gospel of John differs significantly from the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke.

A common theory is that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke were based upon the Gospel of Mark. The Gospel of Mark includes such events in Jesus’ life as his birth, his baptism, and the empty tomb. The Gospels also portray Jesus differently from each other.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus is more of a theologian. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus is presented as a hero and extremely charismatic. The Gospel of Matthew emphasizes the similarities between Jesus and Moses. The Gospel of John highlights how Jesus lived on the earth, and how that represents how one will live in Heaven. Finally, the Gospel of Luke distinguishes Jesus’ miraculous abilities and emphasis on helping the poor. All the Gospels, however, emphasize that Jesus preached about forgiveness and charity.
