When Is Libra Visible in the Night Sky?

If your birthday falls between September 24 and October 23, you may wonder “When is Libra visible in the night sky?”  Libra is one of the 88 constellations and one of the 12 signs of the zodiac.

Ancient people wanted to make sense of the hundreds of stars in the night sky, so they imagined patterns in a group of stars. By naming them, they could follow them and discuss their movements. Farmers would notice when certain constellations appeared and disappeared, and that would be the sign to plant or harvest crops.

They may have needed to know, “When is Libra visible in the night sky?” because the sun appears there on the autumnal equinox. The International Astrological Union (IAU), with the help of Eugène Delporte divided the sky into 88 constellations. Delporte also devised boundaries for all these constellations in 1930, using horizontal and vertical lines.

Zodiac

Some people think that the stars, planets, and other objects in the sky have an influence over our lives. They feel that the movement of planets and stars and such, in their relationship to each other and the earth, are connected, somehow.

The zodiac is 12 constellations that are found along the Sun’s path in the night sky. This path is called the ecliptic.  If you need to know, “When is Libra visible in the night sky?” you need to look between Virgo and Scorpio in the month of June.

When Is Libra Visible in the Night Sky?

Libra is best observed in June, around 9:00 p.m. It’s easy to spot, because the four bright stars form a quadrangle. It is positioned between Virgo and Scorpio.  Libra means “scales” or “balance” and is the only symbol that does not stand for something that is living. The sun passes through Libra during the autumnal equinox, and since the days and nights are the same length, Libra was picked for the name.

The Story Behind the Name

The stars of Libra symbolize the Golden Chariot of Hades, ruler of the Underworld, in Greek mythology. Four black horses pulled his chariot, and it was used whenever Hades wanted to visit the Upperworld. When he saw Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, he was enraptured by her beauty and had to have her for himself. So, he abducts her and she becomes the Queen of the Underworld. Demeter was the goddess of agriculture, and was so depressed about losing her daughter, that she did not allow the seeds to sprout.

Zeus tries to convince Hades to let Persephone go; he will allow it if she has not eaten anything since arriving there and since she had eaten six pomegranate seeds, Hades won’t let her go. So, Zeus rules that she has to divide her time, eight months of the year she may visit her mother, and during the rest of the year she has to stay in the underworld. So, every year, on March 21st, Persephone leaves the Underworld and brings spring with her.
