Who Played in the 1979 World Series?

The World Series is the championship in Major League Baseball. The champion of the National League and the champion of the American League play a series of seven games. The team that wins the best of the seven games wins the World Series.

The Most Valuable Player for the National League was a tie between Willie Stargell and Keith Hernandez. Willie Stargell played first base and was from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Keith Hernandez also played first base, and was from the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Teams in the Regular Season

Throughout the regular season, the Baltimore Orioles were consistently in the first place of their division. The team finished eight games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers, and won the American League East division. The four starting pitchers for the Orioles were:

The Pittsburgh Pirates struggled more throughout their season. Although they did win the National League East, they only won it by two games over the Montreal Expos. Who Won the World Series in 1979?

The World Series in 1979 took seven games to determine the winner. The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles, and came back from a deficit to do so. The first game took place on October 10 and was played at the Orioles’ home stadium. Baltimore defeated the Pirates in this game, five to four.

The second game was played in Baltimore as well, and was played on October 11. The Pirates won this game, defeating the Orioles three to two. Kent Tekulve from the Pirates received the save for the game, ensuring that his team was victorious.

After the second game, the series moved to Pittsburgh. The Baltimore Orioles won the third game by four runs, defeating the Pirates eight to four. The Orioles also won the fourth game by three runs, defeating the Pirates nine to six. In the fifth game, the Pirates played better and beat the Orioles seven to one.

For the last two games of the series, the teams went back to Baltimore. Despite playing on the road, the Pirates defeated the Orioles at home four to zero in the sixth game. In the seventh game, the Pirates defeated the Orioles four to one. They became the last road team to win game seven of the championships until 2009. In 2009, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Detroit Red Wings on the road.
