Why is Information Technology Important?

Why is information technology important? At its broadest definition, information technology (IT) encompasses an entire industry of computers and related parts, including software. For this reason alone, information technology can be considered important. Information technology really is also important because of what it is used for, data management. Whether storing, maintaining, retrieving, transmitting or protecting, life as we know it might be at a stand still without the ubiquitous data stream.

Data, Data and More Data

Whether the term is data, information or knowledge, it all must be counted, stored and protected. Small companies may want to keep information on their clients, procedures and money management organized and private. Large companies have more data, more clients, and possibly even industry secrets that they need managed and secured. Today, much of that information or data is kept on computers. Computers that mainstream with the Internet are always at risk for unauthorized entry from outside sources, often called hackers. These hackers could be teenagers playing a prank or criminal organizations out to obtain money through use of confidential client information. It all must be managed, and information technology covers all of it.

Jobs in Information Technology

• Network Engineer - This job has been compared to plumbing. A network engineer sets up all of the computers and line access for a company. Small companies may have just one location and a few employees to network together. A large company with multiple locations, even internationally, needs seamless and instantaneous communication and access to data. Network engineers often work once everyone else has gone home because they can’t bring a company’s system down during work hours to try out something new.
• Network and Systems Administrator - This job ensures the smooth running of all systems in a workplace. This means the administrator must make sure that all hardware and software are updated and running efficiently. System administrators must maintain knowledge of technology changes that affect their companies’ systems.
• Database Administrator - The people in this job manage the all important data. They design and implement all aspects of the database to make sure the data is available when needed and that the data system can handle the data load. Future data need must be taken into consideration as well as database security.
• Project Manager - Information Technology project managers oversee tasks that management wants done by making sure that the right people work on each task using the best practices available. PMs are an important link in the Information Technology chain by providing communication between bosses or subject matter experts with the people who know how to manipulate the technology.
• Programmers - Many different software applications exist and need programmers to update the systems. Many more systems have yet to be created that will need programmers.
• Network Security Manager - Theft of physical and virtual property is on the rise. Physical property such as computers, printers, or other machines can be stolen from companies without a security plan. Virtual property, such as important and confidential data or software, is at risk from thieves in a company as well as hackers from outside the company. A network security manager’s job develops and implements security practices to safeguard a company’s information technology property.

Why is information technology important? Information technology jobs exist in almost every job sector: public, private and government. From aerospace to zoology, IT workers are in demand. These are just a few jobs available in IT. Many more exist, and many more will be created in the future.  Information technology will continue to employ a wide variety of people who have knowledge and skill.
