Where is Baghdad located? Baghdad is the capital of Iraq, a country located in the Middle East. Baghdad is the largest city in Iraq and is the second largest city in this region of the world, with Cairo, Egypt being the largest. It is located on the Tigris river in east Iraq and is about seventy miles from the border of the neighboring country, Iran. A major city, it has historically been located along major trade routes and experiences a very arid climate with long summers and short winters. It has existed since the 700s and has often been a center for the Arab and Muslim world. The word “Baghdad” is most likely a Persian combination of words meaning “The Fair Garden,” although it is often referred to “City of Peace.”
It is believed that the city was founded in 762 by the caliph Al Mansur with the aim of creating a haven for the Islamic Empire. He cleverly located the city in a position where its inhabitants enjoyed certain power along vital trade routes among the Tigris, a major river.
It is noted as one of the hottest cities in the world, most summer days reaching temperatures past one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. The sky is almost consitently clear during this time of year and rainfall during the summer is virtually unheard of. Low humidity accounts for the presence of summer dust storms, a common occurrence in the hot months.
The City of Baghdad
The city is broken into nine districts that are further broken down into almost ninety neighborhoods. Each neighborhood elects individuals to represent them and the districts elects a city council.
A large government for a large city; about seven million people call Baghdad home. Each representative in Baghdad’s local government represents at least seventy five thousand individuals.
Culture in Baghdad
A center of culture, many theaters, classical music repertories and dance companies inhabit Baghdad. These arts are currently becoming more popular as more films and plays are imported to Iraq, giving the artists working in the community new material to work with.
Many of Iraq’s most popular sports teams are based in Iraq, including some very successful soccer teams. Horseracing is quite a popular pastime, although Muslim spokespeople are currently trying to ban the sport due to their disapproval of gambling.
Several educational institutions reside in Baghdad, including the University of Baghdad, Al-Mustansiriya University and the University of Technology.
Popular places to visit include the National Museum of Iraq and the Hands of Victory arches. The Baghdad Tower is a hotspot for tourists, it’s the highest structure in Baghdad and gazes over the entire city.
There are several other museums, including a wax museum and the Baghdad Zoo, which is the largest zoo of the middle east. The Museum of Arab Antiquities and the Abbasid Palace Museum are also frequently visited attractions.
Damage from War
Unfortunately, due to American invasion and war in the country, many of these cultural centers have been disturbed. Many artifacts and relics were taken from the National Museum of Iraq following the 2003 invasion, which also caused many of the animals in the zoo to be taken (and many who weren’t stolen died from starvation or dehydration since their caretakers couldn’t access them).
Many reconstruction efforts have been underway, however these efforts also include efforts to modernize the city and make it more attractive to the Western world. There are currently plans to build a large ferris wheel similar to the London Eye located in England, a romantic riverside destination, spas, a world-class hotel and a country club are being considered.
